Robertsbridge

Tonight Friday 7th December is Robertsbridge Christmas Capers. There is a road closure in place for the High Street from 6pm – 9pm so please avoid this area in the car as it’s walking only for those 3 hours.

Having said that it will be well worth walking as there is much to see and do and if as usual there will be plenty of Festive Cheer on offer. There will be Street Theatre, entertainment, Carols, the shops and business’s will be open and offering many items for Christmas. There will be food stalls and of course the hostelries will be open as usual for the odd tipple. Lets just hope for good weather and plenty of support. Sandie at the Floral Boutique is celebrating 30 years of trading in the village this week so pop in and see her and wish her well. You can buy Bonfire Society Christmas Draw tickets whilst in there, just 20p a ticket or £1 a book and could win 1 of 3 lovely Hampers. Father Christmas will also be popping into the village on one of his rehearsal nights getting ready for the Big Day, so look out children for that big white beard and red suit.

There is a Poker Night being held by Robertsbridge United FC tomorrow Saturday 8th December at Robertsbridge Club starting at 7.30pm for registration. Cash prizes and all players are welcomed.

Reminders that Robertsbridge Community College is putting on Alice in Wonderland on 13th, 14th and 15th at 7pm each night with tickets available from the college. There is a clash on the 15th with Hansel and Gretel being on at 6pm at Robertsbridge Hall being organised by the Robertsbridge Arts Partnership, please ring 01580 880359 for further information and booking.

Please put aside a short while next Saturday morning 15th, just a few minutes of your time could potentially save a life. There is to be drop in session at Robertsbridge Hall between 10.30am – 12.30pm to see how the Public Defibrillators work and how to use them to help save a persons life. We are lucky to have 2 in the parish and we need everyone to be aware of them, as it could be a friend or a loved one in need. One is on the front wall of the Vets in the High Street and one is at the Sale Hurst Halt in Salehurst. Come along and have a cuppa and see what these fantastic machines can do, they are so simple to use and could save a life, bring a friend or two and then you know you are safe too.

The total for the Street Collection on Bonfire Night has come in with a final figure of £1754.88 with a huge thanks to all of you that collected on the night and for those of you that donated.

Ria Paine spent last week dressed as Bat Girl, Spider Man, Wonder Woman, and Mr Incredible. Her whole week was very colourful and very chilly as it was the coldest week we have had for a while. She was raising money for McMillan Cancer Care in memory of Fiona Hawthorn who died at the end of October after a long fight. The amazing total that she has raised up to when I am writing this is £605.00 with still some more to come in. She may put in an appearance at Christmas Capers to finish of her collection, if you see her please put some money in her collection box as we never know when we may need that service ourselves, well done Ria brilliant effort.

Football: The 1st team travelled to Hooe Sports in an exciting goalless draw. There were plenty of chances for both teams and only an excellent challenge by Robertsbridge Club man of the match Zach Smith denied the hosts the lead on 20 minutes. The Bridge responded when Charlie Phelan’s effort just slid past the post on 35 minutes and just two minutes later a clearance by Luke Williams found the host keeper having to tip the ball over the bar. The second half produced some fine football from both sides but the Bridge went closest on 55 minutes when Toby Blackman’ fine run ended with the ball just sliding wide and three minutes later a fine run by fullback Chris Philips saw his shot just miss the post while at the other end an excellent save by Grant Lewis kept the hosts at bay. Blackman again slipped past four defenders before seeing his shot slip past the post after 67 minutes but with the light fading fast the game ended goalless. Tomorrow the 1st team are away to Rock-a-Nore at Tilekiln while the 2nd team are at home to Battle Baptists III with both matches K.O. 2p.m. Tomorrow we are holding a ‘Poker Night’ from 8p.m. at Robertsbridge Club.

Ladies darts: We hosted The White Hart II (Wadhurst) last week and in a topsie turvey match we were losing 3-2 after the singles with victories for Jackie Danaher and Rosemary Clifford but we recovered in the doubles with wins for Alice Hodges/Carol Apps and Dawn Mitchell/Jackie to level at 4-4. In a remarkable turnaround we won all the trebles thanks to Alice/Carol/Dawn, Jackie/Steph Goldsmith/Alice and Carol/Jackie/Rosemary to win the match 7-4. There were high scores for Jackie [135,112,92,87], Dawn [111,100,87,80], Carol [91,83,79], Rosemary [85,83,81], Steph [80] and Alice[79]. On Monday [10th] we are away to The Wheel Inn 8.p.m.

Darts: We played in the Darts K.O. Cup against Mountfield Club ‘A’ and were 2-0 down after Alec Martin and Alan Apps lost but Richard Hawthorne pulled one back. Ted Goldfinch lost while Dave Goodsell made it 2-3 but Phil Green lost his match which saw us exit the cup. There were 100 + scores for Richard[140,100], Dave[131,125], Phil[121], Alec[100] and Ted[100]. Tonight we are away to Mountfield Club ‘B’(8p.m.).
