Rother honours Carnival volunteer

Three decades of voluntary service to Bexhill Carnival have been acknowledged by Rother.

At last night's full council meeting, Rother chairman Cllr Martin Kenward presented John Cox with a framed certificate of honour.

Over the years, John has served as Carnival chairman, vice chairman and arena convenor. He recently stepped down from committee service.

On Monday, John and his wife Christine were guests of honour in the Town Hall council chamber.

The chairman is himself a former Carnival Committee member. He recalled his own work as convenor of Polegrove arena events - the job combining the "greatest satisfaction with the least praise."

He had been delighted when John took over from him.

Each chairman of Rother is president of Bexhill Carnival.

"On Saturday as president I attended the annual presentation of cheques from the Carnival street collection. It was a delight to see the charities there to receive the money.

"It was also delightful because John Cox received the Gold Medal from the Carnival Guild for his services for all years he has been involved.

"Therefore, it is a great pleasure to make this presentation."

The certificate places on record the council's thanks and gratitude to John for his long and valuable service to Bexhill Carnival.

Thanking councillors for the honour, John Cox said: "It has been an honour and a privilege to serve the town and its community.

"Though I have now retired from the Carnival Committee I shall continue to support it in any way I can."

The chairman appealed to his fellow councillors - both town and country - to nominate other such community volunteers for similar awards.
