Rustington Brownies go green for garden competition

BROWNIES turned all green-fingered last week for a garden-designing competition.

And Elleana Wood, seven, proved she was a dab hand in the garden by winning the Design a Flower Bed competition organised by the Rustington In-Bloom committee for Girlguiding groups in the village.

She was presented with a £25 gift voucher by Rustington Parish Council chairman, Andy Cooper, and chairman of Rustington’s In Bloom committee, Valerie Narayanaswamy, for her hard work.

Elleana, or Ellie as she is known to friends and family, was the first member of the 13-strong 3rd Rustington Brownie Pack to plant a flower in the specially designed patch of land, in Holmes Lane.

She said: “I was really happy and surprised when I found out my design had won. I was really excited about it.”

Girlguiding leader, Nicola Angelo, was involved in running the competition.

She said: “We thought that this was a great way to get the girls into the community. We like to have fun but we also like the girls to get some hands-on experience, too.

“We would like to thank all the members of the parish council, the In Bloom committee and Ferring Nurseries for all their help getting us involved.”

The flower bed, one of three others in the road, will now be part of the village’s display for the South East in Bloom competition, which will take place on Thursday, July 14.
