Scouts stack up on essential skills

The company granted the 1st Hurstpierpoint Scout Group £430 under its Community Chest Fund to buy specially designed stackable crates to replace the worn out ones currently used.

By safely building a tower while standing on the topmost crate, young members are tested not to fall off before it topples over.

Bob Wood, Executive Committee Chairman of the 1st Hurstpierpoint Scout Group, said: “Crate stacking encourages young members to develop self-confidence, team work and problem solving skills, as well as teaching climbing techniques.

“We are grateful to South East Water for the donation which has enabled us to continue to provide this valued and enjoyed activity.”

Michelle Blanch, Production Technician at South East Water, is based in the area and went along to meet the Scouts and see the crate stacking in action.

She said: “We are delighted to be able to support the 1st Hurstpierpoint Scout Group through our Community Chest Fund.

“It’s great to see such a positive reaction to the activity and the benefit it has for the group and youngsters.”

Safety harnesses and anchored ropes are used to keep the Scouts safe alongside qualified climbing instructors.
