Severe weather warning for Sussex

Winds of up to 80mph are expected to hit the Sussex coast today (Saturday, November 14).

Sussex Police are warning drivers to take extra care during the severe weather that is forecast for the next 48 hours.

Superintendent Steve Barry, head of Sussex Police's Road Policing Unit said: "The usual hazards of Autumnal driving such as wet and slippery roads, mist, fog and falling leaves, are likely to be added to by very heavy rain and gale force winds.

"Gusty winds can move you rapidly off your intended course and into the verge or the path of oncoming vehicles.

"It's very easy to get cocooned into the comfort of your car, but you must be ready for whatever nature throws at us and that could well be flooded roads and fallen trees.

"I would urge motorists to adjust their driving to take account of the slippery conditions and poor visibility. If you are driving near or under trees, beware of leaves on the road and be ready for larger debris - and other drivers avoiding it.

"Watch your speed, don't take unnecessary risks and don't be tempted to rush. Be patient with the motorist ahead, particularly when driving through deep lying surface water. If you have to, slow right down and drive through in first gear. Always test your brakes, when you come out the other side."

Neil Hopkins from the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership said: "In rainy conditions, it can take up to ten times longer to stop if the roads are slippery and the spray will reduce your visibility. We are reminding motorists to slow down and leave plenty of space."

"Plan your route by checking local radio travel reports and allow plenty of time for your journey."

According to the Met Office, heavy rain may cause up to 40mm of flooding in the south of England.
