Sheikh involved in pier to pier visit

Eastbourne Pier owner Sheikh Abid Gulzar paid a site visit to Hastings Pier this week prior to the pier re-opening .

He was joined by the Chairman of the Sussex Strategic Business Board and Ambassador for Locate East Sussex Lord Brett McLean.

They were shown around the restoration works by Hastings Pier Charity CEO Simon Opie.

The aim of the visit was to enhance the working relationship between both Piers.

Sheikh Gulzar said “I was pleased to have the opportunity to view Hastings Pier and see what it has to offer the residents and visitors to Hastings.

“I firmly believe that the pier can be the lifeblood of the town, whether that is Hastings or Eastbourne. I would like to think we can work together.

Brett said “It’s extremely interesting to compare the modern Hastings Pier with the traditional Victorian Eastbourne Pier given the fact that both piers were the result of the famous engineer and architect Eugenus Birch.”

Simon Opie, CEO for the Hastings Pier Charity, said “ It was great to see the genuine interest in our pier by Sheikh Gulzar and Lord McLean and we look forward to a strong and healthy working relationship in the not too distant future.”

Simon will be visiting Eastbourne Pier in early March.

The National Piers Society will be holding their National AGM at the White Rock Theatre on June 11, which will be followed by a guided tour of Hastings Pier, a gala dinner at the Azur in the evening finishing off with a tour of Eastbourne Pier on the June 12.
