Sheltered flats refused

Plans for 44 sheltered apartments in Bognor Regis have been refused by councillors.

The proposals by McCarthy and Stone for a site in Hawthorn Road were refused by Arun District Council's development control committee for three reasons.

Committee members believed the scheme's height, siting, bulk and design would be an overdevelopment of the area and cause serious harm to its character and appearance.

The scheme would also have an unneighbourly impact because of an unreasonable amount of overlooking and overshadowing of neighbouring properties.

There was also the need for a legal agreement from McCarthy and Stone to provide money for affordable housing elsewhere in recognition of the proposal's size.
