Simply delicious way to raise cash for the homeless

An initiative to raise money through tips given in restaurants for homeless people in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas has started.

The Street Smart programme involves people adding 1 to their bill at restaurants which will then go to the homeless charity Stonepillow, which runs day centres in Bognor and Chichester and a night shelter in Hunston.

The charity is appealing to restaurants in the district to sign up to help raise thousands of pounds for the homeless before Christmas.

Project coordinator for Stonepillow, Sue O'Neil said the idea had been a great success in London and there was no reason why it should not work here.

"It's a win, win situation," she said. "Being homeless at Christmas is not much fun, or any time of the year. But around Christmas time, it's cold, and everyone is out enjoying themselves, it's much more a difficult time for the homeless."

A small card is placed on the table informing diners about how the scheme works, and if diners wish they can add 1 to the bill. If you don't want to take part, or you'd like to add more, you can.

Simply Delicious in Bognor Regis is the first place to sign up to the scheme. Owner Maria Parkinson said: "We think this is a simple way to make a difference to local homeless people at Christmas time.

"Christmas can be a difficult time for someone without a permanent home, and a voluntary 1 a table is not a huge amount.

"We know that all of the money will go directly to support our local charity, Stonepillow, so that they can offer shelter, support and hope to enable homeless and vulnerable people to start rebuilding their lives."

To sign up to the scheme, and for more information call Sue O'Neil at Stonepillow on 01243 775925 or 07545 203539.
