Speed limit hopes rise

CAMPAIGNERS have moved a step closer to seeing a danger road's speed limit reduced.

In September, people living near the Goring Road/Bramber Road junction, in Steyning, handed a petition to local MP

Nick Herbert, calling for traffic-calming measures in

Clays Hill, Steyning.

They told how cars often failed to slow down to 30mph

as they entered Steyning on a blind corner from Clays

Hill, where the speed limit is 40mph, and said crossing

the road to reach the bus stop or post box was dangerous.

The petition also reached county councillor Derek

Deedman, who has revealed new criteria for speed limits

means that the road is eligible for a 30mph limit.

Mr Deedman said it qualified because longer stretches of

the same road, at either end of the 40mph section, were at

30mph.

He will now ask for it to be discussed at the next Chanctonbury county local committee meeting in January.

Mr Deedman said: "I think it is an anomaly. The residents

who live there are always complaining about the speed of

traffic, so, obviously, I take on board what they are saying.

"There is a lot of concern that the traffic comes round the corner at too high a speed. I think there is a need to reduce it to 30mph."

Jenny Wellard, manager of Primrose Court, in Goring Road, handed the petition to Mr Herbert in September,

flanked by scores of local residents.

She told the Herald yesterday: "There are a lot of people

around this area who are backing this. You just hope and

pray something can be done. It really does need something

done."
