Members of U3A Battle and District had their Christmas celebration on Monday morning in Battle Memorial Hall. It was a packed hall and with chairman Christine Govier dealing with the business side of the meeting in efficient quick time, the celebrations began with Patricia in her Scottish finery playing the bagpipes. This was followed by a skit performed by two of the members, and a visit from Battle Abbey choir who serenaded the company with seasonal songs and carols. There was an abundance of fine food and drink and quizzes during the morning to test members’ knowledge.

This Saturday morning at Staplecross school sees Ewhurst United players taking on “The Dads” in their seasonal match, before having a break until January.

The Ewhurst, Staplecross and Bodiam Garden Society will be holding its Christmas party on the evening of Friday 14th in the village hall. Those members who have not paid for 2013 are reminded that subscriptions are due.

The St James’ Christmas tree festival takes place on Friday 14 between 6-9pm when there will be a Christmas market, mulled wine and mince pies, and on Saturday 15 between 10am and 1pm when refreshments will be served. At 6pm on the Saturday evening there will be the usual candlelit Carol Service in the church.

The Carols on the Green at Ewhurst Green, with mince pies and wine being served will be held on Friday December 21 starting at 6pm.

There seem to be mutterings of “bad weather” looming and the county council says it is ready with their fleet of gritters and salt for the 840 miles of top priority roads and a further 130 miles of secondary roads when snow is forecast.

Looking forward to January! There will be temporary traffic lights between Swailes Green and Poppinghole Lane between January 21 and February 1 for works on new water mains and connections will be carried out.
