Thomas, ten, whose parents Sarah and Philip run The Bay Tree café in Haywards Heath, has been suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Thomas was thrilled when he received an invitation to a Christmas party hosted by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, and Starlight Children’s Foundation, a charity that grants wishes to seriously ill children.

Thomas’ wish was to go to Legoland in Denmark and this was granted by the charity in June 2013 after he had finished three-and-a-half years of gruelling treatment.

This month’s party at No 11 Downing Street was the icing on the cake for Thomas and he came along with 39 other children and their families.

The event was attended by a number of special guests including Chelsea Football Club’s Frank Lampard, TV duo Dick and Dom and Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint.

Thomas’ mum Sarah said: “Tom wasn’t sure who Frank Lampard was but he was excited to meet Rupert Grint and Dick and Dom.

“Tom finished his treatment in April and is now bonny and well and back at Holy Trinity School, Cuckfield after missing about a year and a half of schooling.

“It was very special going to Downing Street and Tom really enjoyed himself - it was a bit overwhelming.”

Actress and Starlight Co-founder Emma Samms said:“The party at Downing Street is one of the highlights of the charity’s Christmas programme and we are enormously grateful to the Chancellor and his team for organising the event, which is in its fourth year.”
