The former deputy editor left the deadlines and headlines behind when he retired last year but he has now turned to writing about what happened around the notebook, rather than inside it.

He has joined forces with two other mighty stalwarts of local news - Ken McEwan and Philip Elms.

Three Men And A Quote is their lifetime story - how they started off at the Bexhill Observer as whippersnappers in the 1960's and worked their way up the editorial ladder until they all left the industry together.

They launched the book at Bexhill Museum in front of an amused and enthusiastic audience of family and friends who they thanked for help and support in bringing their book to a successful conclusion.

The launch was attended by Town Mayor Councillor Bridget George who said she was sure many readers would remember the stories and characters within the pages of Three Men And A Quote.

She said she would trust that "names have been changed to protect the innocent?"

"There are no innocent," replied JD.
