Tired out - but triumphant

A LIONS Club member batted up a tidy sum during a 24-hour table tennis tournament in aid of the Kyle Overington sensory room appeal.

Triumphant but exhausted, Lancing and Sompting Lions Club member Kenny Peckham played non-stop table tennis against a steady stream of opponents, from noon on Saturday to noon

on Sunday, at the Lions community hall in Roberts Road, Lancing.

Toddler Kyle, who was featured in the Herald last month, survived a rare strain of meningitis but was left brain damaged and deaf.

He is the youngest child in England to have cochlear implants in his ears to help him hear.

His mum, Sandra, wants to set up a sensory room for him at her Shoreham home but needs to raise thousands of pounds to kit it out with special lights and equipment.

Local MP Tim Loughton started the tournament, which raised 1,200 for the appeal in sponsorship.

Kenny's wife, Sue, who is also a Lions Club member, said: "Kenny and I were so moved by the plight of Kyle

we wanted to do some fundraising.

"Kenny has a bad back but he was determined to keep going, even though he had to stand to play the whole 24 hours. He cried when he finished the tournament because he was so tired and he spent Monday

in bed recovering.

"I kept everyone going with bacon and egg rolls and lots of cups of tea and coffee through the night. We are really pleased with how much we raised."
