Last night they split into two groups, of about a dozen travellers, and moved onto land in Hawthorn Road, Wick, and at the Rosemead open space, in Littlehampton.

The travellers at Rosemead gained access by crossing the pavement along Fitzalan Road and driving into the park via the public footpath at the rear of the open space.

Arun District Council, which has responsibility for most playing fields across the district, successfully applied to Chichester County Court for an order to regain possession of the land at The Green, yesterday (Tuesday, July 30).

However, Rosemead is owned by Littlehampton Town Council.

A spokeswoman from the council said: “Littlehampton Town Council will be dealing with the situation through the proper processes. Updates will be available from our website as and when they come through.”
