Arun district councillors formally agreed to postpone a vote about the St Modwen regeneration plans until their meeting on July 10.

Trevor Bence, the chairman of the council’s Bognor regeneration sub-committee, said the delay was essential to enable more studies to take place on the vital subject of parking.

“The council has commissioned extra works to evaluate the need for more spaces in the town and provide a number of options to increase car parking spaces in Bognor and make better use of the spaces that exist.”

The unanimous decision confirmed a recommendation by the cabinet members.

An earlier study for the council showed the survival of some 120 spaces on the Hothamton and Regis Centre car parks, after they had been built on by St Modwen, would not be enough.

Well over 100 motorists each day would be forced to tour the streets looking for one of the spaces that remained elsewhere.

St Modwen wants to use the land at the Regis Centre to create a new-look building with an expanded theatre, a 4/5 screen cinema, an 80-bed hotel and some 280 flats.

For Hothamton, the proposal is for a block of 200 flats and a possible shop.
