Views of old Bognor will help to light up the town

The former Bognor Regis Observer Reminiscences writer Sylvia Endacott will be presenting a new collection of old views of the town.

"If people enjoy witty banter then this is the event for them," said Seafront Lights chairman Jason Passingham

"Sylvia actively encourages a two-way dialogue during the evening with guests regularly adding in their own recollections as each slide appears."

With the beleaguered Picturedrome facing an uncertain future, the talk is set to form a topical and interesting evening.

Costing just 4,500 to build, the original assembly rooms were opened in May 1886 and originally used for a variety of functions and events.

Films were first shown there a year later and the name changed to Picturedrome following a buy-out after the first world war. It has changed hands several times since.

Taking place next Thursday, at West Meads Hall at 7.30pm, previous themes at this now annual event have included the seafront, illuminations of yesteryear, Butlins and Bognor's suburbs.

"The event provides a pleasant and relaxing finale to the group's busy fundraising year," said Mr Passingham.

Although the summer lights were turned off at the end of September after their six-month run, fundraising by the all-volunteer team continues all year round.

Tickets for the slide show, priced at 5, must be bought in advance and are available from Heygates Paperback Exchange at 67 High Street, Bognor Regis. The evening includes a light buffet during the interval and a raffle.

Organisers have thanked the Exterior Cleaning and Maintenance Company which has sponsored this year's event.
