PANTO TIME: Last weekend we welcomed cheerful hordes of people to the village to enjoy our wickedly funny pantomime Waldronella written by Nigel Beard. Yet again we discovered new talent (this village is packed with it) as well as some long-established performers and the whole thing fizzed with fun. Standing at the door as everyone left, I was well-placed to see the smiles on everyone’s faces as they talked about the performance and to hear loads of positive comments about how much they liked the improved lighting and the extra space since the pews have been taken out at the back of the Remembrance Chapel. It’s interesting to reflect that church buildings have been used as theatres for hundreds of years, from the days of the Mystery Plays and Miracle Plays centuries ago and which are still revived. We have these beautiful old buildings by the hundred in our villages and towns and if they are to be retained for shrinking congregations to worship in, we must once again find purpose for them as community centres. All our dramas in Waldron over the past nearly 20 years or so which have utilised the church as part of the action have generated income which help to keep the church building open and in use and encouraged a vibrant community spirit. Long may they continue.
