Wasp nest gives pupils day off school

PUPILS at Chantry Community Primary School had an unexpected day off after a wasps nest was discovered on Friday October 1.

The nest, found at approximately 7am, was situated outside the school near the boiler room.

A school spokesman said wasps entered the building and they could not put the children at risk from to stings or allergic reaction.

A decision was made to close the premises whilst the infestation was dealt with.

An East Sussex County Council spokesperson said when the nest was discovered "a significant number of wasps escaped", adding:

"The nest wasn't near the children's' area but when the door was opened some wasps flew into the main area of the school.

"A pest control company was called and the wasps and the nests were removed. The school was closed as a precautionary measure."

The 220 pupils returned to their studies on Monday when the school re-opened.
