‘We’ll never forget those who gave their all’

CANDLES, prayers and poems were some of the ways Littlehampton reflected on those who gave their lives during the First World War.

On Monday evening (August 4) a special service was held in St Mary’s Church to mark the centenary of the Great War.

From 10-11pm the lights in the church were switched off leaving only the gentle flicking of candles to illuminate the building, in Church Street.

Littlehampton mayor Jill Long was accompanied by fellow town and district councillors and their families for the occasion.

She said: “We were there to remember what was going on in that time which was so dark and what people were facing when the war broke out.

“They gave their everything for what we have today. We can never forget that.”

The night was part of the national Lights Out event organised by the Royal British Legion.
