West Meads plans on show

A company behind a controversial scheme to extend West Meads Precinct wants to talk to its critics.

The directors of R Rawlins and Son Ltd have decided to hold a display about its proposals to counter arguments against the proposal.

The details will be on show at its premises at 1C The Precinct, behind the chemists, between 9am and 2pm today, tomorrow and Monday.

The company has also begun to distribute leaflets with details of its scheme to every one of the 350 households on the West Meads estate.

Director Simon Toone said the idea was to ensure residents gained information about the extension directly from the firm as well as to gather support for the proposals.

They feature an extra eight flats, an extension to the current GPs surgery and a new shop to be added on to the southern ends of the two existing blocks of buildings which line both sides of The Precinct.

They will be the first additions to the two three-storey blocks with 16 business units and residential use above since the area was built more than 40 years ago.

An outline application for the extensions has been submitted to Arun District Council for a decision. Work could start early next year if the proposal is approved.
