Westfield Women’s Institute meets in the Parish Hall and welcomes new members – just come on the day, or ring 01424 754013 for more information.

The ladies of Westfield are asked to support the 1066 Cycle Club in their initiative in collecting unwanted bras. These are sent to Africa for women to buy from market stalls, which gives them greater status and makes them less vulnerable to abuse. The income generated is given to breast cancer research and also 1066 Cycle Club projects like the bike stands recently installed at the recreation ground. Joan at ‘Bilbrough’, Cottage Lane is collecting the Westfield donations; bras can be in any condition as everything is recycled if they are not sold, but washed and clean, please. Just leave in a bag on her doorstep.

A new dance class, Dance Latino (Line Dance Latin Style), meets weekly at 8pm in Westfield Community Hall at £5 per session. Feel those Latin rhythms and learn the moves. All ages welcome - join the fun! More information from Marie 07710 251465.

The next Friendship Club meeting is on Monday, June 10th from 2-3.30pm in the Parish Hall. The yearly subscription is £5 with 10p per meeting, and new members will be made very welcome. The Friendship Club do not meet at Whitsun and August bank holidays. Therefore their future dates for your calendar are, June 24th; July 8th and 22nd; September 16th and 30th; October 14th and 29th; November 11th and 25th; December 9th.

This year’s Westfield Village Fete is on Saturday, July 6, and volunteers are needed to help set up, run stalls and clear up afterwards. The Westfield HUB meets at The Plough on Fridays from 10am to 12noon. A warm and friendly welcome and a decent cup of tea/coffee are assured at the Hub every Friday morning between 10am and 12noon.

The Rye and Villages Lions Aid Hawkhurst School. Following an earlier visit to Hawkhurst C of E Primary School last September, when Rye and District Lions Club presented the school with a Life Skills educational pack, the Lions returned to the school last week. This time, Rye Lions presented the school the complete Life Schools Resources suite of packs. These educational packs contain details of challenges and situations that children may come across in their early life that are not normally catered for in the academic curriculum. These include Life Changes, such as losses a child might experience through the death of a relative or a family breakdown. This resource adopts a proactive and reactive approach to loss and change and will enable teaching staff to make an immediate considered response to any loss or change situation, including bereavement. Another pack, Key to Resources, deals with health issues and is particularly suited for young people with visual impairment, with student worksheets in a large font and includes a CD-Rom, which enables them to increase or decrease the font as necessary. Another of the resources is Smoke Rings which is an interactive and interesting way to learn about smoking issues, with 48 question and answer cards and a series of trigger suggestions for further discussions. Before the packs were presented by Lion Jim Radley, Rye Lions Youth Officer, to Rob Roker, Year 3 Class Teacher, Rye Lions President, Malcolm McDonough, told the assembled children who the Lions were and what they did. He told them that the Lions were the largest service organisation in the world with clubs in more than 200 countries, with 1.35 million members in 45,000 clubs. The Lions of the British Isles and Ireland together with their European colleagues donate £88 million each year to good causes. Rye Lions raise over £17,000 every year and the majority of this is donated locally. One project all Lions Clubs in the South East have undertaken is to raise a total of £250,000 to enable the Air Ambulance to operate in the hours of darkness and it is anticipated that this appeal will reach £100,000 by the end of this June. Rye Lions have already made donations to this appeal. Malcolm ended by saying that the Lions motto was “We Serve”. Rye and District Lions would be pleased to welcome enquires from any adult in the Hawkhurst area that might be interested in joining the Lions and would have fun whilst raising money for those less fortunate and also enjoy a monthly social. Rye and District Association of the National Trust - Saturday June 22. A summer picnic at Smallhythe Place from 5pm followed at 6pm by a performance in the Barn Theatre of Celebrating Shakespeare, a light-hearted romp with the Bard devised and directed by Peter Mould. It promises to be an amusing and entertaining event.Tickets at £12pp must be ordered from Ros Adkins by returning the order form included in the last News letter or by calling 01797 253763. They can also be purchased at Smallhythe Place reception desk prior to the event. As numbers are limited it is important to get your order in now.
