Worthing couple's diamond years

A COUPLE who met in a work café over coffee are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

Douglas and Ena Brew, of Thurlow Road, Worthing, met when they were both working for Ford in Dagenham. Ena was 18 and Douglas was 22.

Mrs Brew, now 83, said: "I was having a coffee one day and Douglas asked if he could join me, then he asked what I was doing that evening and the rest is history.

"Although we met in 1941 we waited until after the war to get married."

After their marriage in 1947, the couple had two sons '“ Robert and Graham. They now also have two grandsons '“ Joachman and Callum.

Asked what the secret to their long marriage is, Mrs Brew said: "Everyone says give and take but that's automatic.

"There is just a bond between us. We have enjoyed ourselves and have never spent a night away from each other."

Mr and Mrs Brew planned to have a quiet meal to celebrate their anniversary which was on Thursday, April 12.

In August, they will have a family celebration when their son Robert visits from his home in Cyprus.
