Young pirates invade Rustington Community Primary School

Around 60 year-two pupils from the Rustington Community Primary School, in North Lane, took part in some pirate-fuelled fun.

The children all slipped into their seafaring best to take part in a lesson they wouldn’t forget.

Their classrooms were transformed into caves filled with treasure chests – the likes of which would have made famed pirate Blackbeard weak at 
the knees.

The pupils took part in arts and crafts activities, making treasure chests and gold coins, before having a pirate party in the afternoon.

Year-two teacher Vicky Bowman, said: “The pupils had an absolute whale of a time.

“We always try to finish off the half-term with a fun day like this.

“It was all part of the children’s learning journey, Pirates A’hoy, which for this term was based around pirates.”

Since the start of 2013, lessons had been dominated by a pirate theme, from dividing up gold coins and treasure in maths, to learning about the Jolly Roger in history.

“The whole point of it all is to make the curriculum as fun and enjoyable as possible.

“We want to really spark the children’s imaginations to make learning exciting and I think telling tales about pirates is a brilliant way that we can make the curriculum come to life,” said Mrs Bowman.
