Amy shows true stayingpower to retain her title

Competing at Leamington Spa last week, the former St Francis bowler from Haywards Heath kept herself and Sussex bowls in the limelight with another stunning display of top quality play.

Her first national singles title last year earned her the right to represent England in the Champion of Champions event in Christchurch, New Zealand, at the end of November but that means she will miss the official presentation of the trophy this time around.

But that will hardly bother the bowler who now plies her trade with Worthing club Homefield Park and is also due to play for her adopted country (England) in next year’s British Isles Championships in Jersey.

Much sooner than that will be Sunday’s Sussex championship final against Jill Hill from the Saffrons at Popes Mead.

At Leamington Truran beat players from Lancashire 21-9, Nottinghamshire 21-18 and Berkshire 21-10 in the early rounds before defeating Joan Welch (Herts) 21-14 in the quarter final.

Next up was another very good draw player in Hampshire’s Liz Russell but she was beaten 21-17 to set up a final against international Sue Davies of the Broadway Club, Worcestershire. The pair had prevented an all-Hampshire final with Davies putting out Margaret Holden in the semis.

The finalists had met in last year’s semi final and this time around Davies seemed intent on revenge as she built a 10-1 lead. But Truran then took the mat forward for medium length jacks and it worked a treat as she took 13 shots without reply before completing a 21-14 win.
