Bargh bonny over Scotland success

Cathy Bargh was again in smashing form on the badminton court last weekend.

The Sedlescombe-based talent was triumphant for England against Scotland and then achieved two runner-up finishes in an international tournament.

First up was the 13th annual staging of the McCoig Trophy clash between Scotland and England at the Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre in Largs last Friday.

England ran out 18-6 winners overall and clinched all five matches in the over-50 age group, including quite a convincing success for Bargh over Anne Wood in the women’s singles.

Later the same day, Bargh lined-up in the over-50 women’s singles at the 2012 Yonex International Veterans Championships, which were also held at the Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre.

Bargh led compatriot Janet Walker 21-19, 16-15 in her first match of the three-player round-robin event when her opponent retired due to a thigh problem, but was later beaten 17-21, 15-21 by Danish player Lone Knudsen.

She returned the following day for the over-45 women’s doubles alongside Cheshire-based partner Kay Vickers. The partnership won three of their four matches to finish second.
