Basement boys ready for liftoff

BEXHILL cricket captain Steve Phillimore is targeting two wins from their final four Sussex Division Two matches to avoid the wooden spoon.

The Polegrove outfit lost ground at the foot of the table after succumbing to neighbours Sidley at the weekend and the gap to second bottom Preston Nomads now realises 33 points, although Bexhill do enjoy the luxury of a game in hand.

A favourable run-in awaits with Cuckfield the first of three eminently beatable visitors on Saturday August 9.

Phillimore said: "It's looking hard - we've got to win two of the last four but I hope we can do it. We need to improve on last week but it only takes something little."

Sidley captain Scott Woodroffe admits it will be a tall order for his side to cling onto their impressive fourth place until the end of the season.

Some testing fixtures loom in their final three games while several sides queuing up behind them waiting to pounce.

Woodroffe said: "It's definitely there but we've got three really hard games to play (Lewes, Haywards Heath and Cuckfield). Being realistic hopefully we can nick one more win if we can play well."

Sidley are without a fixture this weekend.
