New venue is a hit with boxing club

A near capacity crowd at the Phoenix Arts Centre was treated to a hard-hitting night of boxing on Saturday.

Despite the usual late withdrawals which left the likes of Steve Garlick and Jamie Lennard frustrated, 14 bouts went ahead on a dinner show hosted by West Hill Boxing Club.

West Hill’s head coach Dave Bishop said: “It was a decent show, good turnout. The club should’ve made a fair bit of money for St Michael’s Hospice at a new place which I’m sure we’re going to use again.”

Two of the host club’s nine representatives were victorious at an event which attracted competitors from clubs as far afield as Billericay ABC in Essex and Kings Heath ABC in Northampton.

Kyle Logan produced a good performance to edge a very tight, all-action top-of-the-bill bout against the more experienced Alex Suslov (Billericay) despite giving away two kilos in weight.

Callum Wood extended the unbeaten start to his career to three matches by coming through another close encounter against the very tall Charlie Lee (Kings Heath), who went into the bout unbeaten in four.

Of the others, debutant Henry Chapman and Finn Metcalfe could consider themselves highly unfortunate to be on the wrong end of points decisions, while Tom Borthwick was narrowly beaten by Kye Minter, the nephew of former world middleweight champion Alan Minter.
