Garton has recently signed a new two-year extension to his contract, which will see him remain at Hove until at least the end of the 2018 season.

The 18 year-old left-arm seamer put pen to paper with Sussex back in November on a Junior Professional Contract, but the Brighton-born youngster has now extended his deal for a further two seasons.

Garton has progressed through the Sussex’s Youth and Academy ranks and first featured for England Under-19s last summer against the touring Australians, before going on to spend some of this winter on the Potential England Performance Programme (PEPP) in South Africa.

He was selected in the England under-19 squad for the World Cup in February and impressed.

Now he is celebrating a wicket with his first first-class delivery - for Sussex against Leeds/Bradford MCCU in the season opener at Hove.

“It was a bit of a surreal moment taking a wicket with the first ball, especially with the wicket playing the way it was,” said Garton.

Garton went to Hurst College and played for Three Bridges. He’s also played for Horsham and is still expected to turn out for them this summer.

In the meantime he just wants to build on the great start he made to life in the senior ranks.

“It’s straight into the competitive stuff now and I don’t know about selection - everyone is fit and fighting for places,” he said.

“I’m just concentrating on my performances and will let the selectors do their job, and I’ll do mine.”

Garton is pleased to see Jon Lewis appointed Sussex’s assistant head coach.

He added: “It’s great having Lewy – he has really helped my game over the past few years and I have him to thank for many things with my bowling. I’m really pleased for him to become assistant head coach.”
