He grabbed 7-69 in his 28.2 overs as Cuckfield were bowled out for 143 after winning the toss and opting to bat.

New Roffey skipper Matt Davies admitted they then made hard work of the chase, but was pleased to see them over the line with 144-7 for 30 points.

He said: “Cuckfield is a difficult place to go, we won there last year, but previous years we have struggled a bit over there.

“It’s a tough wicket to chase on, in the second innings it becomes harder and harder to bat so it’s a big advantage to win the toss.

“Obviously it was nice to get off to a great start. It should have been a lot more comfortable, but it was nice to get the win under our belts.”

Roffey took wickets regularly during the afternoon with Fleming the main danger man.

Leigh Harrison also grabbed 1-23 and Luke Barnard took 2-42, with Roffey only using three bowlers.

A number of Cuckfield batsmen made starts, like Jordan Silk (25), Brad Gayler (20), Marcus Campopiano (28), Nick Patterson (28) and Josh Hayward (21), but all failed to push on.

In reply, Theo Rivers (26) and Rohit Jagota (36) led the way, but with Greg Wisdom (3-17) and Patterson (2-39) doing some damage with the ball, it was down to Dan Smith (18*) and Fleming (seven*) to see Roffey home with three wickets remaining.

Davies added: “It was a difficult pitch to bat on. In the field, everything went to plan and George bowled fantastically well. All three bowlers bowled really well.

“I was thinking around 150/160 would have been a good score to keep them to, but we obviously got them for less than that.

“With the chase, everything was going to plan, Rohit batted well and although we had a bit of a wobble George (Fleming) and Dan (Smith) saw us home.

“The wicket was a bit slow against the spinners and it was not the easiest of tracks to get runs.

“Theo and Rohit batted well as did Chris Webb until Rohit ran him out in a bit of a mix-up, but Dan and George saw us home.”

Roffey host Hastings & St Leonards Priory on Saturday.
