FOOTBALL: Crane and Oatway in England College trials

TWO young footballers have taken the first step to fulfilling every player's dream of representing their country.

Arundel defender James Crane, 18, and East Preston midfielder Charlie Oatway, also 18, have both made it through to the next round of the England College trials.

The pair, who both attend Chichester College, were delighted to hear they were among the 70 players from across the country who have been selected for the next stage of trials, in Leeds, on Wednesday.

They will take part in a training match, from which 30 players will then be selected for the final England training camp at Lilleshall.

Then, the group will take part in a development programme, before a final squad of 18 will be chosen for a friendly against Wales.

And the final squad will also travel to Italy, where they will represent England in an international tournament.

Crane said: "I never even thought that I would make it this far. To be honest, I'm in disbelief. It's a real shock, but I'm so proud.

"I just can't wait. It is a massive opportunity. I need to go up there and play as well as I can, and hope I get picked."

Oatway, the son of former Brighton & Hove Albion captain, Charlie, said: "I'm delighted. I can't believe I've even made it this far. But the prospect of representing your country is such an honour.

"It's a shock to be here so I haven't even thought about the final 18 yet. But that really would be a dream come true."

Crane added: "I play at Arundel with Gary Norgate, who got selected for the trials when he was my age.

"He has helped out and led me down the right track, so I know what to expect and I know what they expect at the trials."

Arundel assistant manager Simon Butler said: "It's a great achievement to get this far. James has shown great maturity, and has been a real assist to the team this year. He can play centre back or left side.

"He's very adaptable with a good head and quick feet, and that's the kind of player they look for."
