FOOTBALL: Rebels stunned by Eastbourne

WORTHING Football Club's seven game unbeaten league run came to an end on Wednesday night as they suffered a shock defeat at lowly Eastbourne Town.

Rebels went down 3-0 in their Ryman Division 1 South clash against a struggling Eastbourne, who started they day second bottom in the table.

It was a night to forget for Worthing as were three down at the break and missed two penalties and had a goal disallowed in the second half.

Assistant manager Simon McMenemy said: "It's difficult to pick apart what went wrong, I think the issue was we never really got going.

"They had three chances to score and took them and apart from that never really got out of their half.

"Some people will blame it on complacency, but I don't think that's the case. They simply were well fired up and wanted it more than us.

"Saturday (against Folkestone) was always a big game so this hasn't changed things, we don't need to tell the lads how important it is, I'm confident of us."

Town's debutant Scott McDonald opened the scoring after nine minutes as he turned Stuart Axten and fired under Alan Mansfield.

His second came just before half-time from the penalty spot after Glen Woodburn was adjudged to have hauled him down, while Jamie Salvidge made it 2-0 with 35 minutes gone.

Adam Mitchell missed a great chance after 44 minutes and again in the 55th as Ross Treleaven put him through.

Rebels looked to have got themselves back into it on 60 minutes as Jamie Brotherton netted from the spot after Gavin Gordon was fouled, but the referee made him retake after ruling Gordon had encroached the area. His second effort was saved by the feet of goalkeeper Russell Tanner.

With six minutes left Rebels missed another penalty, Brotherton and Ben Johnson argued over who would take it only for Johnson to step up and see his kick again saved by Tanner.

Worthing also had Treleaven strike ruled out for offside on 81 minutes, so on another day it could have been completely a different story for Worthing.

Rebels do remain top on goal difference and now face a difficult trip to second place Folkestone Invicta on Saturday.

WORTHING: Mansfield, Denton, Woodburn, Axten, Farmer, Brotherton, Patton, Akehurst, Johnson; Mitchell, Treleaven. Subs: Gordon (Mitchell 60), Clarke (Farmer 66), Koroma (Patton 80), Sayers, Fernandez (youth goalkeeper).
