FOOTBALL: Weekly County League round-up

WICK FC went down 1-0 at Chichester in a closely-fought match in County League Division 1 on Tuesday, after they had started their season with a 2-1 win over Hassocks on Saturday.

Chichester's James Temple got the only goal on Tuesday with 14 minutes left, and Wick assistant manager Brett Torode said: "There was nothing in it really and I would have been quite happy if it had stayed 0-0. It was one of those games when a half-chance or error would win it.

"They're going to be a top-five side and we knew it was going to be difficult but we gave a good account of ourselves."

Chichester started the better, but Phil Turner had a great chance to give Wick the lead but put his one-on-one effort wide. After Temple's goal, Wick's John Lawson had a couple of half-chances but failed to convert them.

George Gaskin came off the substitutes bench to score both Wick goals in their win over Hassocks on Saturday.

Gaskin opened the scoring on 30 minutes but Spencer Slaughter levelled things within six minutes.

Wick looked the more likely winners after the break and Lee Barnard's cross was turned home by Gaskin. Gaskin then netted a penalty on 84 minutes but referee Nigel Baker ordered a re-take following an encroachment and Hassocks keeper Joel Harding saved Gaskin's second attempt.

Littlehampton lost 1-0 to an 88th-minute goal at Oakwood on Saturday, just moments after they had a penalty appeal waved away. Golds felt Matt Russell was pushed to the ground from a corner but play continued, Oakwood broke and got the only goal.

Littlehampton still could have got a point but Russell failed to convert from inside the six-yard box and Danny Hand missed a one-on-one. Golds joint boss John Suter said: "The result was disappointing and we probably deserved a draw. But, on another day, with the chances we had, we'd have won 4-1."

LITTLEHAMPTON: Stoner; Ward, Crawford, McKay, Hellen; Manning, White, Russell, Burgess; Power, Hand. Subs: Hazel (Crawford 70), Robertshaw (Manning 75), Stone (Hand 80), Askew, Peacock.

Clymping began life in senior football with a 1-1 draw at Wealden in Division 2.

Dan Barnard put Clymping ahead in the 48th minute when he slammed home the rebound after a goalmouth scramble, but Joe Shelley was sent-off for a second bookable offence in the 60th minute, and Wealden equalised with a late penalty.

Clymping player-manager Dominic Di Paola said: "It was a fair result. We did okay but I think we need to play better than that to do well this season. We competed well but we're going to come up against better sides this season, so we will need to find last season's form."

CLYMPING: Oakley; Castro, S.Di Paola, Young, D.Di Paola; Meehan, Shelley, Brown, Brackley; Moss, D.Barnard. Subs: Gaskin (Barnard 75), Bunting (Brown 80), Weston (Brackley 85), Miller.

A disputed penalty four minutes from time meant Rustington went down 3-2 at Southwick in Division 2.

James Wotherspoon fired Wickers into an early lead but Phil Churchill turned home Steve Kirkham's cross to equalise on 11 minutes. James Bennett headed home Joey Cumber's free kick to give Blues the lead on 20 minutes but Wotherspoon drew Southwick level deep into first-half stoppage-time.

Wickers then dominated proceedings in the second period, without creating any clear openings, but they took all three points from the penalty spot on 86 minutes.

A shot was deemed to hit Ryan Morten's arm and former Blues striker Ryan Walton scored from the spot.

Blues boss Pete Matthews said: "Overall, I think we deserved a draw, so to lose like that was very frustrating."
