Here is how Philip Richardson rated the Reds' players. Do you agree?
5. Tom Dallison - 7
A very solid performance in which he did very little wrong. He linked well with Ferry on the left-hand side putting some good balls through for him. His solid display was capped off by his calm penalty which sent the keeper diving the wrong way. However, I still believe he is better playing at centre back as often he was beaten for pace defensively. Regardless this was a solid and astute performance. Photo: Jamie Evans/UK Sports Images Ltd
6. Jack Payne - 7
Payne was very solid in midfield always looking to play the simple pass. This was key in the second half when he did excellently to spread the ball wide which continuously gave space to Francomb and Frost on the right wing. Defensively he held his shape well not affording the Gillingham attackers any space or time. While nothing ground-breaking Payne linked the play well and kept the ball moving. 7. Jake Hessenthaler - 8
Hessenthaler put in another fine performance this time taking more of the forward-looking role with Payne sitting slightly deeper. Once again solid in defence not allowing any easy channels forward for Gillingham. Going forward he showed a good mix of simple and longer passing, showed off in the second half when he put in a lovely curling ball for Tyler Frost in behind which nearly led to a chance. Another faultless performance in midfield led to Crawley’s control of the game in the second half. Photo: Mark Fletcher/MI News & Sport Ltd
8. Will Ferry – 9
A really impressive home debut showing all the class expected when on loan from a Premier League club. Going forward he looked confident and showed off his pace when running at defenders. What was most impressive was his defensive effort, always tracking back to win the ball and then carry it forward on the attack. He showed great intelligence to assist Ashford’s goal when put through by Frost, rather than shooting himself he got his head up and squared it for an easy tap in. He could’ve had a goal for himself a few minutes later when he powered past the defence but couldn’t find the net with his finish. If he can build on this performance, he will have a very good season. Photo: Getty Images
