Di Paola: '˜It was a comfortable win'

Horsham manager Dom Di Paola reckoned his side put themselves under undue pressure to get a big win when a 1-0 against their bottom-placed opponents.

He admitted he would have been quite happy with a 1-0 win as it would have still earned them the three points.

In the end a 1-0 lead at half-time created by Joe Shelley’s penalty was added to with another penalty put away by Shelley plus further goals by Charlie Farmer, Evan Archibald and Terry Dodd.

Di Paola said: “We were just glad to get the win. Everyone was expecting us to rack up loads of goals but we knew it wasn’t going to be like that ‘cos they’ve changed their team quite a bit.

“First half they made it very hard for us. Second half we moved the ball better, created better chances, were a bit tighter and it was quite comfortable.

“The first half we weren’t at their best so they could have pinched something. It was nice to keep the clean sheet. Not conceding is always my aim.

“I said to the boys at half-time. I don’t know why we put ourselves under so much pressure to score - all you have to do is win 1-0 and get the three points. “Until you get the first goal against a team you are expected to beat, there’s a pressure, you can feel it from the supporters on the sideline and the players are trying a bit too hard to score and were het-up and tense.

“Once we got the first goal we calmed down a bit. The last ten minutes of the first half we looked good and then second half it was a routine win really.”

Horsham caused St Francis big problems defending set-pieces, resulting in two of their goals being scored from corners.

He revealed: “We’ve been working on set-pieces, so it was nice to see them come off.

“We have got some good players who can attack the ball and when we provide good delivery, we’ve got a chance.

“Kieron Pamment delivered some great balls and Charlie Farmer and Doddsy (Terry Dodds) attacked them well so we are pleased it’s another game ticked off on the list.”
