Golds taught the Mavericks a lesson with a number of classy finishes and quickfire goals to consolidate second position in County League Division 1 with a 10-1 win.

Amazingly, the score was 1-1 after 29 minutes as United’s Oli Jones levelled up George Gaskin’s 17th-minute strike.

But Golds then crashed home four goals in 12 minutes to lead 5-1 at half-time as Dan Simmonds netted a quick double, the outstanding Alex Kew hit a superb strike and George Gaskin scored his second.

The Mavericks kept things tight for 35 minutes in the second half, but a Mitchell Hand goal on 80 minutes saw the floodgates open again as the home side crashed in four more in the space of four minutes, with substitutes David Gaskin, Sam Blundell (two) and Danny Hand all getting on the scoresheet.

Littlehampton assistant manager Richie Hellen said: “If I am honest, we probably missed five chances that could have been goals in each half.

“It was a good all-round team performance in difficult conditions. Considering we had four or five players out, those that came in and those that came off the bench made an impact.

“It’s good for competition as Dan Simmonds and George Gaskin came off the bench to score or help change the game against Newhaven and the three that came off the bench on Saturday scored four goals between them in the 25 minutes they were on the pitch.”

On their opponents, Hellen added: “To be honest, they did not stop working and tried their best all the way through.

“They have a young manager over there, who has only been there a few weeks and is trying his best to turn things around.”
