“Ultimately, it’s going to be down to how I do over the next period. It doesn’t matter what I say. It’s going to be a job that a lot of people want, but all I can do is come in every day and try to put a smile on the faces of the people that are here.”

Despite their league position, Crawley are in a unique circumstance with their new owners, WAGMI United. The American ownership group took over in April this year and since then have signed a high calibre of players with the vision of taking the club to the Premier League as the ‘internets team’.

On why the Crawley managerial role is in such high demand, Young said, “It’s a massive club that’s not realised it’s potential. Especially with the new owners coming in, the infrastructure they’re trying to put in place and the quality of players.”

Young has been at the club since 2014. Then as a player, Young saw Crawley as a League One side and is desperate to return the club higher up the football pyramid.

“You’ve only got to look at Stevenage and Leyton Orient,” said Young on some of the league’s top sides this season. “Why can’t Crawley be the same? When I joined here, we were a League One side and that’s the aim with these owners.”

Crawley will host Newport County this Saturday at their Broadfield Stadium.
