Full steam ahead for Haywards Heath

Heath recorded an overwhelming win against a Bognor 2 side that was the only other team in the league that could boast the same early season form as their hosts with six wins from six going into Saturday’s clash at Whiteman’s Green.

A close encounter was anticipated by both sides but Heath put in a clinical performance scoring over 100 points and allowing the opposition nothing in return.

Heath racked up sixteen tries and one penalty during the 80 minutes of pulsating rugby, with the highlight being five tries for winger Matt Duncan alongside scores from Fotheringham, Lucas, Townsend, Liddell, Pritc

The match kicked off at the earlier time of 2.30pm in front of a large crowd of Heath supporters and in the opening exchanges there was little sign of what was to come as Heath settled into their task with an early penalty that was converted into points on the board by Fotheringham.

Then, as the home forwards got into a strong rhythm, creating the platform for the backs to demonstrate their pace on the ball, Heath became unstoppable with wave after wave of attacking play making it a difficult afternoon for Bognor 2.

With a couple of returning players mixing with new faces promoted from the colts section, the entire match day 22 seemed to connect well and at times were playing instinctive rugby much to the delight off the Whitemans Green crowd. A half time score of 47-0 meant that there was no way back for Bognor who whilst second in the league had no answer to the incisive running of the Heath three quarters.

The whole team played their part in continuing this tremendous run of form with what was by far the most complete performance of the season.

The afternoon ended with presentation of The Tierney Wealth Consultancy Player of the Month for October to front row forward Joss Townsend for his telling contribution on the pitch in both the tight and loose position over the last few weeks.

Heath’s next match is away against East Grinstead 3 on Saturday 15 November.

The spirit and confidence amongst the squad could not be higher and this success on the pitch follows the announcement last week that Haywards Heath Rugby Club has been granted CASC (Community Amateur Sports Club) status by HMRC which brings enormous tax benefits not only to the club but also its members and corporate partners, making the task of upgrading the Clubhouse facilities at Whiteman’s Green that much more attainable in the not too distant future.
