Gruelling Steyning Stinger sees some muddy-good local finishes

Three Horsham Joggers took part in the challenging Steyning Stinger on Sunday.

The 15th annual running of the event - which is a hilly, cross-country and often muddy run - through the South Downs between Worthing and Shoreham.

Steve Wigmore finished an impressive second in the half marathon 13.2-mile distance in 1hr 42min 07sec - he was 1-50 behind winner Andrew Brown.

Steve Light finished in 1-56-08, Charley Crocker in 2-20-18 and Fiona Clifton in 2-42-01 amongst 251 finishers.

Host club Steyning AC’s Lee Oxley finished just outside the top ten, his 1-49-10 earnt him 11th place.

Horsham Amphibians’ Laura Starmer was the second female home in 2-01-10, which was 34th overall.

The Stinger was also run over a gruelling marathon distance where Steyning AC’s Ewan Dunlop was third in 3-16-00.

Brighton Phoenix’s Jon Pepper led the 192 finishers home in 3-02-20, ahead of Uckfield Runner Stuart Mills in 3-14-50.

In a half marathon in Eastbourne, Joggers’ Brian Frost led the Joggers home in 1-38-17.

Other times: Janine Littler 1-42-39, Alan Pettitt 1-43-24, Paul Yokom 1-44-49, Mike Thornton 1-46-18, Gemma Berrill 2-07-12, Neil Jennings 2-07-13, Claire Burrows 2-21-32, Paul Chandler 2-30-00, Mick Duplock 2-31-12.

At Leith Hill over 13.1 hilly miles, Lorraine Treadwell and Chris Yeomans finished in 2-16-08 and 2-18-50 respectively.

The biggest honour of the weekend was reserved for Mal Thornton who completed the 33-mile Imber Ultra in Avon finished an amazing 10th in 4-58-24.

In the Selsey 10k - which is a flat and fast race on roads - Robert Willison lead the way in 50mins 34sec.

He was followed by Penny Barron (52-19), Caroline Daykin (55-46), Jo Willison (59-25) and Verity Dods (1-13-11).
