Hail Hayley, a Sussex golfing star of the future

Hayley Mackay is making a name for herself at Bognor Golf Club.

Sixteen juniors took part in the 36-hole President’s Trophy at Bognor and the winner was 17-year-old Hayley with a total of 83 points.

Second place went to Tom Stoneham with 74 and Jordan Vincent was third with 72.

Hayley was also the 18-hole winner on 46 ahead of Ryan Breach on 38 and Tom Stoneham was third on 37. Nearest the fifth pin was Marcus Embleton while Ryan Breach was nearest the tenth.

After a lunch provided by club president Bill Chick, six took part in the over-28 handicap event. The winner with 41 points was 11-year-old Mitchell Cane.

Hayley is in her final year of A-levels and is a boarder at Hurstpierpoint School. She has been a member at Bognor for two years.

Earlier this year she won the girls’ event at the junior open. And when 16 pairs entered the adult and junior foursomes competition for the Kiwi Trophy, Hayley and Ron Stevens won, beating young Jake Stoneham and his uncle Peter Stoneham in the final.

At the recent ladies’ annual meeting, Hayley was awarded a prize for being the most improved junior player in the ladies’ section.

Hayley is now playing off 18 and Ian Stoneham, the junior organiser, says he hopes to include her in junior matches next year.
