Horsham’s Calum is English Schools champion

Competing for Sussex, the 14 year old Tanbridge School pupil was involved in an exciting and tense battle, and cleared 3.30m, the same height as his closest rival, winning overall on countback having made less attempts throughout the competition.

It was a tremendous performance from Calum, ranked second nationally, especially as the person he beat, Andrew Douglas from Hampshire, is the only athlete in the country ranked higher than him.

A delighted Calum said: “I came third in the national indoors last year but this is the first big competition I’ve won. It was very close, I’m quite good friends with the person I beat from these type of events, it was a real shock.

“Even though I didn’t beat my personal best of 3.34m it should give my confidence a big boost for the future.”

Elsewhere there were other good performances from Blue Star athletes. Kat Bajorinaite finished seventh in the final of the Intermediate Girls 300m hurdles in a pb 45.79s and Dan Eeles also finished in seventh in the Intermediate Boys 1,500m in 4m11.28s.
