Inexperience can't stop Chichester's fantastic fencers

Chichester fielded three novices, all of whom have been fencing for less than a term. Entering their first county competition, no-one could have predicted just how well they would do.

In the men’s event, Nick Judd fenced superbly to finish second, an amazing result after only half-a-term’s fencing.

In the ladies’ event Kathryn Evans finished third despite a severe hip injury which she refused to let interfere with her first competition.

Jules Findley finished second having fenced for only three weeks, showing what guts and determination can do if the desire to do well is there.

In the ladies’ epee, Lucie Muldoon in her first competition came a very creditable fifth after a valiant effort.

The men’s epee was the crowning event of the day with some of GB’s top fencers competing in a high-class field.

Chris Bishop, normally a foilist, fenced superbly to finish an excellent fifth.

The youngest entrant on the day, aged 15, was Liam Stigant who, despite suffering from extreme jet-lag, having only just arrived back from New York, was in superb form to take bronze.

Peter Beadle, still only 17 and the second youngest, was brilliant working his way through the field until he reached the final against Crawley’s Dudley Tredger, one of Britain’s elite epeeists and a Commonwealth medallist.

Beadle matched Tredger point for point until his opponent’s experience won the day, leaving Beadle with silver.

CFC head coach Sharon Blackman congratulated the fencers for fencing so well and with good sportsmanship.
