Is the Great Escape on for the Rocks?

Ten games to go, 12 points to make up '“ and the Nyewood Lane faithful have been given new hope the Rocks can stave off the relegation that looked a certainty just a few weeks ago.

A famous victory over Chelmsford, who have been in the top three all season, sparked wild scenes at the Lane last Saturday and has created a new wave of optimism over the club's future '“ both short-term and long-term.

The 2-1 triumph over Chelmsford meant the team took ten points from their first eight games under new management duo Darin Killpartrick and Kevin Braybrook.

Although a 1-0 defeat at Bromley followed on Tuesday night, Rocks fans have started working out whether there is any way their troops can catch the pack of clubs above them.

To be sure of staying up, the Rocks would have to overtake another two sides, currently 11 and 12 points ahead of them.

But it may be simpler than that.

Last season, because of financial and ground problems suffered by others, only one side went down '“ and in the present financial climate, a similar scenario is not out of the question.

One frustration is that without their seven-point deduction for fielding an unregistered player, the Rocks would be only five points off safety.

Some cling to the hope the points could be restored after a 5,000-plus name petition was presented to Conference bosses opposing the deductions dished out to four clubs.

But for now, all the players can do is concentrate on playing catch-up '“ starting at home to St Albans this Saturday.

Fans say staying up is possible.

Former club secretary Pete Helsby said: "Given the new-found confidence Dabba and Kevin have instilled in the team, anything is possible.

"Last Saturday's result just shows what you can achieve with the right spirit and effort.

"It may be too late in the season to make up the gap, but you only have to look at the League Two table after AFC Bournemouth's away win this week '“ they seem capable of staying up after pulling in points deducted."

Fan Barry Anderson said: "Can we finish above the bottom three? Probably not.

"Can we nonetheless avoid relegation? Yes.

"Do we want to avoid relegation? Yes, especially if there is a chance that, next year, the Conference will be run with a degree of professionalism '“ a big if."

Killpartrick prefers not to talk about the table and where the Rocks might finish, instead trying to get his team focused on one game at a time.

But he said: "We will continue to go into every game aiming to win it and believing we can.

"This set of players are fearless and see every game as being a winnable one."
