Neil beat the previous record set by James Baker, Chichester in 2009 by 11 seconds to finish in a stunning 32.19, on a day blessed with cool, calm weather and firm conditions underfoot.

346 runners competed in Sunday’s event, including teams from 32 Sussex and Surrey running clubs, on the challenging two-lap course which starts at Horsham Rugby Club and includes the rough terrain of Sunoak bridleway and the long, steep climb of Hammerpond Road.

With no fewer than 50 runners at the starting line, the home team looked set to dominate the event despite stiff competition, particularly from Lewes AC. The latter’s three fastest runners secured the Men’s Team Prize, but seven of the remaining 14 prizes went to the Joggers, with five of their number finishing in the top 20.

For the home team, in fifth place overall and first in the Vet 45 category was Bryan Camfield in 36.03, with Dean Angell just 20 seconds behind, giving him first place in the Vet 50 category.

In a continuing show of great form this season, Catherine Corck was first Senior Woman (second woman overall) in a new personal best time of 41.39 and, together with Rachael Guckenheim (41.58) and Samantha Smith (47.00), won the Women’s Team Prize for the Joggers. Steve Wilson was first Vet 60 Man in 43.44, and Sue Paterson first Vet 45 Woman in 49.06.
