Point to Point Diary

WE were delighted when one of our horses, Clover Bay, owned by Sarah Dawson, finished a good third at Barbury Castle recently.

The mare had won a weak maiden at Parham last season in soft ground and she got her soft ground again at this meeting, where she jumped beautifully.

Sounds Good made his debut at the same course on the second day of the two-day Owners and Riders Festival meeting and finished an excellent second after not having run for nearly three years.

Now eight, he is a JP McManus cast-off, originally trained by Charlie Swan, with just a third place to his credit in National Hunt racing.

He has needed time. When he came to me he couldn't walk and trot properly. We've given him grid and flat work to help him and he has enjoyed hunting. It was a magnificent effort from him in very testing conditions.

My assistant, Catherine, won her third best-turned out award of the season at the meeting.

Other local point-to-point yards are in fine form and Carolyn and Marcus Gorman have had another winner at Larkhill when Merry Vic was impressive in the second section of the Restricted race.
