Priory students in third spot

Lewes Priory were the only local medal winners in the Sussex Schools Year 7 and 8 Championships over the muddiest course of the winter at Ardingly College.

Priory, led home by Ben Burgess and Adam Wilkinson in 11th and 13th placings respectively, finished third behind Blatchington Mill and Warden Park in the Year 8 boys team championship. Jago Leckie from Hailsham split the two Priory runners, placing 12th.

The highest individual placing for a local runner came in the Year 7 girls event in which Beth Kidger from Maresfield, running for her Tavistock School team, finished an excellent fourth while her twin sister Megan placed tenth. Megan finished one place ahead of an out-of-sorts Melissa Ruffell from Hailsham.

In the Year 7 boys race Patrick Hough from Chailey had an excellent run to place fifth, one ahead of Beacon's Joe Kelley, while there were top-dozen placings for Tideway's Seb Saunders (ninth) and Beacon's Ryan Driscoll (12th).

East Hoathly's Nigel Gates was a spectacular winner in the British Masters Cross-Country Champion-ships at Bournemouth.

Gates was content to trail the highly-fancied Mike Hagger from Tipton, the reigning champion, through the early stages, but halfway round the second lap he struck and moved smoothly away to win by a clear 50 metres in 25mins 31secs for the 7km course.
