Rebels starting their recovery

WORTHING FC HAVE not quite put behind them the 5-2 and 6-1 hidings that opened their season last week. But the taking of a point in Essex on Saturday, then an enlightened last 20 minutes at home on Monday suggest the worst may be over.

It will be of consolation to Rebels' capable keeper Rikki Banks that the only club below Worthing in the table, without a point at all, is his previous one '” Hendon. And for the more analytical of Woodside fans, a look at the top (see page 70) shows that Worthing's first four opponents in this apparently fraught start to their season are filling the first four places '” and not just thanks to goal difference.

Fifth are Hampton & Richmond Borough, who come to Woodside on Tuesday, after Rebels have gone on Saturday to ninth-placed Harrow Borough.

Worthing took the pitch on Bank Holiday Monday against big-spending Bromley as though already 6-0 down. "Damage Limitation" was the notice on the doors of a five-man back line, a four-man midfield and a solitary lookout up front who was Lee Newman, the Eastbourne Borough striker dual-signed in time for Saturday.
