Remembrance Day isn't forgotten at Chichester Golf Club

The golfers play in teams representing the Army, Navy and RAF, and in fine weather 68 players competed for the trophy.

The RAF veterans proved the high fliers, winning the team prize with an average score of 32.1, beating the Army on 30.8 with the Navy on 28.8.

Some of the individual scores were outstanding, even with the good conditions, and John Harvey with 41 points could claim only third place behind Jim Robertson on 42 and winner Richard Parker on 43.

All the entrance money for the competition went to the Poppy Appeal and, together with poppy contributions, the princely sum of £209 was raised.

Before their annual meeting, Chichester Golf Club ladies’ captain Kathy Donohoe presented the prizewinners with their trophies.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park’s Surrey & West Sussex Winter League season got under way with a 3½-½ home win over Hankley Common.

The lead match, involving Dave Hirons and Harvey Terry, provided high-class golf, with both pairs scoring three birdies. Hankley’s pair caught the home pair cold and were four up after four holes and held this lead until the tenth hole.

Hirons and Terry made a brave fightback and had levelled by the 18th tee.

It was fitting for the last hole to be shared and the match halved. The remaining three matches provided easy wins for the home side.

Dank and dismal conditions greeted the 46 Cowdray Park seniors who competed in the final medal of the year. With wet fairways and slow greens, balls were not travelling as far as recently.

Only seven players scored 70 (par) or better, with Dave Hirons taking an early lead with a top-class nett score of 65.

He looked set to return to the winner’s circle until former seniors’ captain Wally Mitchell returned a sparkling 63 to confirm his recent return to his early-season form.

Another player returning to his best was Allen Sibley with a 68 and third spot.

The other players scoring par or better were Jan de Vries and Dave Tilley (69) and Mike Holden and Tony Castley (70).

Tony Castley was the only player of the 46 to score a two and thus scoop the pool.

BOGNOR

Fifteen Bognor juniors took part enthusiastically in two competitions. The Chase Wheeler, sponsored by Keith Fisher, was a scratch event for low handicaps and a Stableford for all.

The scratch winner was Jordan Vincent, playing off five, with a gross score of 78, ahead of Ryan Maskell on 81 and third Jason Cullen with 86.

The Stableford prize went to Scott Bingham with 41 points. Maskell was second on 40 and Jake Stoneham third on 39.

Three took part in the over-28 handicaps and Mitchell Cane was the winner with 36 points.

Four teams of four took part in a Texas scramble.

The winners with a nett score of 58.4 were Jason Cullen, Max Littleboy, Matthew Kissell and David Harris.

Second were Matt Wood, Jake Stoneham, Scott Bingham and Mitchell Cane with 59.6. Jordan Vincent, Hayley Mackay, Megan Tinson and James Woosley were third on 60.8. Nearest the pins were Megan (fifth) and Jason (tenth).

Fifty-three ladies entered a turkey medal at Bognor.
