This time they were easily the best represented club at Steyning AC’s Roundhill Romp, another tough and hilly downland race of around six miles.

Although they could not quite repeat their superb 1-2-3 result at Littlehampton, they still provided 41 of the 465 runners and a number of good performances ensured they almost took maximum points.

Paul Sargent again led home the men’s contingent, finishing ninth in 35 minutes 17seconds. Close up in 11th was Darryl Webb in 35.47 and then came Jason Collett 22nd in 37.34, Mark Nicholls 23rd in 37.38, Andy Sayers 70th in 41.27 and Trevor Symes 86th in 42.17.

Janet Clapton maintained her good form by leading the BHR ladies team as she was ninth female overall in 45.29.

She was followed by a clutch of club members, including Sally Symes 36th in 50.17, Liz Carter 38th in 50.40, Emma Buckland 39th in 50.48 and Bryony Monnery 42nd in 51.01.

On Saturday club runners were at the St Lawrence Fair Fun Run, a five-mile mainly off road race that takes in Danny House and a tough ascent of Wolstonbury Hill.

Last but certainly not least, James Sorbie did well to record 21.40 at the 5k Hove park run on Saturday morning. It was a particularly commendable effort considering the intense heat.

With such vast numbers of Burgess Hill Runners now turning up for West Sussex Fun Run League events, it is quite a job for the club’s race secretary Trevor Symes to doll out all the numbers. He is pictured above doing an excellent job at Steyning.

There were medals for three young Haywards Harriers at Withdean on Sunday. Mollie Beale was second in the 70m hurdles and third in the 150m, while Jessica Courtney was third in the 800m and Daniel Holbrook third in the high jump.
