School sets up table tennis programme

Bexhill High School has obtained a grant of almost £10,000 from the Sports England Small Grants Lottery Fund to develop a community-based table tennis club and leadership development programme during the coming year.

The school will work with its partner, The Rother Table Tennis Academy, as well as ETTA 3 Star Premier and Sport England Club Marked Club, Rother Community Table Tennis Academy to deliver the project.

The partnership will see access available for students to higher level coaching and competition, as well as access for students to work towards coaching qualifications in table tennis.

The Leadership programme will see the Bexhill High Leaders go into cluster/local primary schools to deliver supervised sessions, including a Butterfly Table Tennis Skills Circuit.

Leaders will also follow a course of activities to develop skills, as well as having the opportunity to take the ETTA Table Tennis Networker Award.

Leaders will be supervised by Bexhill High PE teacher and SSCo Sam Whiteman with leadership progress monitored by both Mr Whiteman and the Rother Table Tennis Academy coach.

A community club set up at Bexhill High will enable students and those from the community to enjoy both social play, coaching and competition in a club setting organised and run by a qualified coach from the academy.

Ping Pong High Playground is a project based around two outdoor table tennis tables based in the grounds of Bexhill High. Students will have supervised access to the tables mainly at lunch times but it is possible that they will be available to use during break times.

Both tables will be supervised by the new Bexhill High Table Tennis Leaders, who will be on hand to assist students and organise some fun activities, including mini-tournaments.

By encouraging pupils to have a go at Ping the school hopes to attract them to come along to the new community club based at Bexhill High Academy in the evening where they will be able to continue to have fun whilst improving their skills and receive some coaching from an ETTA-qualified coach.
