Shades of Bolero aslocal public get chance to see for themselves

It may be a step away from Torvill and Dean’s famous Bolero routine but spectators at the Dolphin Leisure Centre in Haywards Heath over the weekend can expect some top class performances.

Roller skating is enjoying a revival and popular sessions have been running at the centre, which prompted the management to ask the the Federation of Artistic Roller Skating (FARS) if they could host the annual championships.

They were successful in their bid and this weekend the event will feature the finals of the youth (17-18yrs), junior (19-20yrs) and senior (20+) championships. Practice starts on Friday (July 26) and competition commences the following morning.

The performances will culminate with the free dance and long programmes on Sunday afternoon.

FARS-apppointed national coach Nick Mallinson lives in Seaford and said this week: “The sport has much in common with ice figure skating and has the same disciplines of dance, figures and free skating.

“Skaters are coming from all over the UK to compete and during the weekend it will produce some astonishing performances of roller skating skill, style and athleticism. It should be an exciting time for roller skating fans.

“There is currently a resurgence of interest in the sport taking place all over the country.

“The Dolphin’s management want to start their own skating academy and that could lead to Haywards Heath producing national champions in the future.”

Mallinson, who has been coaching in the sport for many years, will be running courses at the Dolphin in the autumn when the skating academy is launched there.
